For centuries, Sicily faced the horrors of attacks by marauding pirates. In this song, Bonagia, such an invasion is described when the pirate ships arrive by night at the shores of the eponymous gulf town. The text comes from a traditional anonymous Sicilian poem and the melody was composed by Rocco Pollina and Baldo Pastore in 1979. Michela learned this song in Sicily from folk singer Umberto Leone as the sound of crashing waves punctuated the chords of his guitar. It was one of her greatest joys to sing this with Rocco and Umberto on stage before that very same sea.
